Chloasma (also known as Melasma), is a dark discolouration of the skin that typically appears on sun-exposed areas of the face but can appear elsewhere on the body too. The condition doesn’t cause any other symptom but may be of great cosmetic concern.
Occasionally referred to as ‘Mask of Pregnancy’ Chloasma is often associated with the female hormones Oestrogen and Progesterone. It is especially common in pregnant women, women who are taking birth control pills (oral contraceptives) and women taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT) during menopause.
The Cottage Surgery regularly treats Chloasma and has several therapies which remove or reduce pigment change; these can include the controlled use of Medical Peels, topical application of specialised products or, utilising medical grade lasers.
